AFC South Draft breakdown

Let’s take a look at the AFC South teams drafted.  Who to look out for in the upcoming fantasy season.(Grades are on total team draft, not fantasy impact.)

Houston Texans – C+

Houston took Whitney Mercilus in the first round.  The defensive end/OLB prospect brings a pass rusher to the defense.  Mercilus is a boom or bust prospect.  He totaled 16 sacks a season ago.  Only two the previous two seasons.  Is he a one year wonder or a player who is coming into his own?  Only time will tell.  If he produces this year, it makes a great defense even better. DeVier Posey is a reciever from Ohio State.  Houston has needed a complement to Andre Johnson for years.  Don’t look for posey to make a big impact next season.  Keyshawn Martin is a reciever and return man.  A guy to keep your eye on if return yards count and he makes an impact catching the ball.

Indianapolis Colts – A-

This was a fantasy dream of a draft.  Andrew Luck went first overall and will make an impact this season.  Grab Luck by round the end of 3.  As i always say with rookie QB’s, Have a back up plan.  The Colts got help for Luck also.  Luck’s Stanford teammate Coby Fleener went in round two.  Fleener is a Dallas Clark type of tight end.  Should be a solid red zone target and a good back up tight end for you.  May be good enough to start in deep leagues.  After Fleener Indy grabbed Dwayne Allen. He is more of a traditional tight end.  I don’t see him making much of a fantasy impact in 2012.  T.Y. Hilton is a small speedy receiver that could make an immediate impact.  Another guy to look at late.  He may have some big games and be non factors in others this seasons.  Vick Ballard is a guy to draft late.  A tough runningback with good size.  He has sleeper written all over him.  LaVon Brazil is another small receiver out of Ohio.  Brazil will contribute on special teams and could make an impact offensively.  I wouldn’t draft him.  but keep your eye out.

Jacksonville Jaguars – C-

Justin Blackmon is a great upgrade for the Jags at wide receiver.  That being said i’m not sure how much he can help your team next season.  The quarterback is the issue, not Blackmon.  I wouldn’t look at him before round 8.  The rest of the Jaguars picks were spent on a punters and defense.  The Jags D is still not good and I wouldn’t draft them.

Tennessee Titans – C

Kendall Wright was the first pick of the Titans.  Wright gives the Titans another weapon in the passing game.  I expect him to have some good moments next year.  Someone who could provide quality depth on your roster.  He has big play ability and may help for your bye weeks and when injuries hit.  Look for him after round 9.  The bulk of the Titans draft after Wright was spent on Defense.  Adding depth and starters.  Tennessee is a middle of the road defensive team.  If you wait on defense and the top-tier are gone, Tennessee isn’t the worst squad to have.
