Mark Ingram was placed on the IR with a shoulder injury. Spiller is the next man up. After that, it’s not an ideal situation.
Next man up is CJ Spiller. Spiller is an explosive game changing back when healthy. But staying injury free has never been easy for him. If you own CJ Spiller he’s a must start at this point. With all the injuries around the NFL this season, be glad you hung onto him.
But who’s up after that? With his history, you may need to know the names behind him. They aren’t ideal.
Rookie Marcus Murphy is a smaller back who has returned 27 punts this season. One for a touchdown. He’s also returned 12 kickoffs. So there’s a little value if individual return points count. But that’s where it ends for Murphy’s production this year. he hasn’t attempted a rush or been targeted.
Tim Hightower, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals and a brief stint with the Redskins in 2011 will get work. He has 12 carries this season for a 4.0 yard average. It looks like the plan is for him to get some first and second down carries.
So if you’re choosing who to grab I’d look toward Hightower first. Murphy may find himself getting some looks too. In really deep leagues you may want to take a playoff flyer on him. An injury to Spiller and here may be you’re new third down back for the Saints.
